What is cashmere?

Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, combed — not sheared — during the spring moulting season. Each goat yields only a small amount of usable fibre per year, which is why genuine cashmere commands a premium. The result is a fibre of extraordinary fineness: lightweight, supremely soft, and with an insulating quality that far exceeds its weight.

Responsible sourcing matters

Not all cashmere is created equal. Demand for cheaper cashmere has contributed to overgrazing in Mongolia and China, putting pressure on grassland ecosystems. At HUG, we work only with brands that can demonstrate responsible sourcing — prioritising animal welfare, land stewardship, and fair treatment of herding communities.

Caring for cashmere

Hand wash in cool water with a gentle wool detergent, or dry clean for best results. Never wring or tumble dry — press gently in a towel to remove excess water and lay flat to dry. Store folded in a breathable bag with a cedar block to prevent moth damage. Pilling is natural in the first few wears; a cashmere comb will remove it easily without damaging the fibre.

A well-made cashmere piece, cared for properly, can last decades. It is the antithesis of fast fashion — slow to produce, slow to wear out, and slow to date. Choosing quality cashmere once is always better than replacing a cheaper alternative repeatedly.
